Recovering Timor-Leste’s Traditional Architectonic Heritage

As part of their mission and responsibility, the State Secretariat and the National Directorate of Culture have been supporting a series of cultural activities developed by communities. Amongst these is the recovery of traditional architectonic heritage, through support to building or rebuilding of Uma Lulik – the sacred houses around which much of the community life develops.

In 2008 and 2009, this project had the support of the United States of America Embassy in Timor-Leste, which helped recovering sacred houses in four districts: Lautém, Oecusse, Bobonaro and Ainaro. In 2010 and the forthcoming years, the State Secretariat and the National Directorate of Culture will continue supporting communities throughout the country, aiming at recovering the rich diversity of forms that traditional architecture in Timor-Leste presents.
